The Downs are Westmeath senior football champions for the 11th time after defeating Coralstown/Kinnegad on a 4-12 to 1-15 scoreline at TEG Cusack Park this afternoon.
Luke Loughlin and Dean Egerton combined for 1-10 over the hour for the victors as they saw off their counterparts by six in the end to claim their club’s first Flanagan Cup success in three years.
The Mullingar men dominated large portions of the first-half, with Kevin O’Sullivan’s palmed goal in the eighth minute surging them into a lead they’d never surrender as they went on towards a 1-9 to 1-3 advantage at half-time.
Callum Cruise netted a penalty for Coralstown/Kinnegad in the run to the break, but they’d conceded more goals via Egerton and Ian Martin after the change of ends which left them nine adrift heading into the game’s closing 10 minutes.
Free-taker Darren Giles got a couple of two-pointers back for C/K but he’d be given his marching orders with two minutes remaining after receiving a black card on top of a caution.
Two minutes later and Jonathan Lynam had the ball in Coralstown/Kinnegad’s net again, sealing the victory for The Downs as they now go on a Leinster club SFC quarter-final date with a Tullamore side which defeated Ferbane by 0-19 to 1-12 earlier today to claim third consecutive Offaly SFC crown.
