A Colm Murphy penalty midway through the second-half proved the difference as Portarlington defeated Courtwood by 1-7 to 0-7 in Portlaoise to claim their fifth Laois senior football championship title in six years.
Pat Roe’s men were trailing by 0-6 to 0-5 when Murphy was adjudged to have been fouled by Dan Boland in the square and referee Maurice Deegan waved horizontal arms and awarded the penalty to the holders.
Murphy tucked away the spot kick and, after that, the points of Jake Foster (free) and Paddy O’Sullivan were enough to see their side over the line as Courtwood’s attack was held to just a point in the closing quarter at Laois Hire O’Moore Park.
Courtwood got out to an early 0-4 to 0-0 lead in this replay decider, with free-taker Matthew Byron in good shooting form, but their opponents would send over a two-pointer via Sean Byrne and points through Murphy and O’Sullivan to leave it all square come the break.
Two more Byron frees kept the underdogs’ noses in front before Roe’s men hit the front for the first time through Murphy’s penalty and never looked back as they retained the Jack Delaney Cup.
