Newbridge held off a strong push from Magherafelt at Celtic Park this afternoon to seal a 1-17 to 1-15 victory and make it back-to-back Derry senior football championship titles.

The defending champions made the perfect start with a fisted Callum McGrogan goal assisted by Conor Doherty, but their opponents levelled it up by the seventh minute and then hit the net themselves through Shane Heavron two minutes later.

Newbridge sent over the next three scores to move back in front and Conor McAteer would double their lead ahead of Heavron raising a white flag at the other end, leaving the scoreboard to read 1-6 to 1-5 at the break.

Shea McGuckin’s free tied things up three minutes into the second-half, but the holders would surge clear again thanks to the points of Oisin Doherty (2), Padraig McGrogan and one from McAteer from behind the arc.

McGrogan and Cormac Murphy exchanged points ahead of Doherty registering a two-pointer that made it 1-14 to 1-8 with 15 minutes remaining.

The closing quarter saw Magherafelt pushing, registering two-pointers through Heavron (free) and Dan Higgins but the scores of McAteer and Eamon Young were what proved the difference for Newbridge in the end.
