Ballintubber got their 2025 Mayo senior football championship campaign off to a winning start by dealing Charlestown Sarsfields a 0-12 to 0-10 defeat in Clogher.
Three early points from veteran forward Cillian O’Connor helped settle the West Mayo side into this opener well and the county man would go on to add two more as his team held a 0-7 to 0-3 lead at the interval.
Charlestown cut their deficit to two points within nine minutes of the restart with the help of a fine Paul Towey two-pointer as they chased their opponents' lead.
Ginger Tiernan’s kept the heat on until the finish, but couldn’t find the equaliser or goals they needed in the dying stages as ‘Tubber held on for an opening win.
Meanwhile, Aghamore and Breaffy played out a 2-12 to 2-12 draw in their opening round fixture in Aghamore.
Mayo star Aidan O’Shea punched in an early goal for the visitors, but majors at the other end via Liam Lavin and Fergal Boland sent Aghamore towards a 2-4 to 1-5 half-time lead.
The home side pushed their advantage out to six after the change of ends, but it’d be halved thanks to a Liam Irwin goal in the 54th minute and a two-point free from Jack Livingstone would be backed up by a Matthew Ruane point to bring the sides level.
The sides traded points down the home stretch ahead of Conor O’Shea’s score giving Breaffy the lead before a free at the other from ‘keeper Adam Byrne saved a draw for Aghamore.
