Leo O’Connor is the latest name to be linked with the Westmeath senior hurling vacancy.
O’Connor, who led Offaly to an historic All-Ireland U20HC success last year after coming within a whisker of winning an All-Ireland MHC title two years earlier, could be in line to replace fellow Limerick man Seoirse Bulfin, who stepped down in June after only one season in charge last month. Bulfin won just two games during his tenure against Down and Kerry in the Joe McDonagh Cup and was subjected to ‘tortuous’ criticism, Westmeath GAA chairman Frank Mescall told a subsequent county board meeting.
Locals Adrian Moran and Stephen Shiel have already thrown their hats into the ring, while Clonkill’s Kevin O’Brien could also be interested in the role which will require a major rebuild over the next few seasons.
Former Westmeath football star Alan Mangan, who is in charge of county hurling champions Castletown-Geoghegan, has ruled himself out.
