Kerry punched their ticket into the All-Ireland senior football championship final on July 27th by seeing off Tyrone on a 1-20 to 0-17 scoreline at Croke Park this evening.
The Munster champions sizzled in the second-half in hot conditions at headquarters where David Clifford (1-9) fired in the game’s only goal in the 29th minute to send his side towards a 1-9 to 0-9 half-time lead.
Tyrone had made the better start in the capital, running up a 0-4 to 0-1 lead after 11 minutes, but they’d fall behind 10 minutes later and Clifford’s brilliantly taken goal six minutes before the break felt like a turning point.
Darragh Canavan would register four points (one two-pointer) in the opening dozen minutes of the restart, but they weren’t enough to put the Red Hands back ahead and they’d go scoreless for 22 minutes after that as Kerry went about their business in the meantime.
Killian Spillane, Paudie Clifford, David Clifford and Sean O’Shea all sent over scores which upped the lead to seven for Jack O’Connor’s men, with ‘Man of the Match’ Joe O’Connor also getting in on the act for the Kingdom.
Malachy O’Rourke’s side ended their scoring drought through Seanie O’Donnell in the 64th minute and a Canavan free would be backed up by a two-pointer from his brother Ruairi in the last minute, proving mere consolation in the end for Tyrone as their opponents now move on to a third Sam Maguire Cup decider in four years where they await the winners of tomorrow’s other semi between Donegal and Meath (4pm).
