GAA president Jarlath Burns says he wants a review into the restoration of provincial replays, adding that he doesn’t feel that penalties are the best way to decide a final.
This past weekend saw a cracking Munster senior hurling championship final between Cork and Limerick going to penalties at the TUS Gaelic Grounds, with Rebels claiming the title after a 3-2 win in the shootout.
It marked the first provincial hurling championship final to be decided on penalties, with many feeling that the match should’ve gone to a replay since.
Burns, who has saw his native Armagh losing out in shootouts on a few occasions since they were introduced in 2022, is of the same opinion.
"I don’t agree that penalties are the best way to end any final. Coming from Armagh, that’s definitely my position,” he told RTE Sport at the launch of the All-Ireland senior hurling championship yesterday.
The GAA president added: "We did bring a motion of replays to Congress. Unfortunately, it didn’t suit Munster at the time because of the preliminary quarter-finals that are played a week later.
"In the light of what has happened at the weekend, it’s definitely something I think we should review."
