Galway staged a late comeback to secure a 4-14 to 2-20 draw against Derry at a wet Celtic Park this afternoon.

Having trailed for large portions of the game, the Connacht champions hit the front with a Matthew Tierney goal late on before Conor Doherty’s point at the other end ensured the sides would share the spoils.

Rob Finnerty and Shane Walsh struck first-half goals for the Tribesmen but it was the home side that deservedly took on a 1-11 to 2-5 lead at half-time, with Conor Glass punching in their goal after a sweeping move forward from the Oak Leafers’ attack.

Paddy Tally’s charges looked on course for both points once Niall Loughlin’s goal put them eight points up in the 50th minute, but Galway hung in and got a goal from Tierney in the 62nd minute to keep the heat on.

Derry’s lead of two would be wiped when a high hopeful ball from Kieran Molloy wreaked some havoc and came into the path of Tierney who punched in ahead of Doherty landing the equaliser for the Ulster side, as both teams got off the mark in the All-Ireland SFC group stage at the second attempt.
