Tom Lahiff’s point after the hooter saw Dublin come away from Salthill with a 1-18 to 2-14 victory over Galway in the All-Ireland SFC’s ‘Group of Death’ opener this evening.
Looking to bounce back from their shock Leinster semi-final defeat to Meath three weeks ago, Dessie Farrell’s side struck over early points via Sean Bugler and Killian McGinnis before the Connacht champions found some rhythm to go 0-5 to 0-2 ahead.
The Dubs trimmed their deficit to two points and then hit the front with Cormac Costello’s goal to rock the home side and eventually move towards 1-9 to 0-8 half-time lead.

The Tribesmen made the perfect start to the second-half with a Matthew Thompson goal and moved ahead prior to Costello (free) and Brian O’Leary giving the lead back to the capital men.
The margin would be at three midway through the second period and Bugler’s point made it 1-16 to 1-12 on the hour mark before Galway produced another well-timed goal.
This time it was Rob Finnerty that bundled the ball over Stephen Cluxton’s goal line, and although the hosts would level it twice in the closing stages, the Dubs’ still had a last chance and it saw them patiently finding Lahiff in space in front of the posts to send over the winner.
