Cork picked up their first win of this year’s Munster senior hurling championship in emphatic fashion by handing old rivals Tipperary a 4-27 to 0-24 defeat at a packed Supervalu Páirc Uí Chaoimh.
Before a 42,231 crowd at their home venue, the Rebels’ red-hot start saw them 2-4 to 0-1 to the good after a dozen minutes, with Tim O’Mahony and Patrick Horgan lashing in the goals after Tipperary had been reduced to 14 men with the early dismissal of sharpshooter Darragh McCarthy for an altercation just before the throw-in.
Alan Connolly lashed in the Division 1 champions’ third goal in the 16th minute as they went on towards a commanding 3-13 to 0-12 lead at half-time.
The points of Jason Forde and Jake Morris helped Liam Cahill’s side reduce their arrear to single digits prior to Seamus Harnedy and Declan Dalton raising white flags at the other end.
Cork’s fourth goal of the afternoon would come via Dalton in the 64th minute, making it 4-23 to 0-21, and points from Robbie O’Flynn, Tommy O’Connell and Horgan (two frees) rounded off a dominant showing from the home side.
