Louth will play Kildare in the semi-finals of the Leinster senior football championship in two weeks’ time after coming through a battle with Laois in Newbridge this afternoon.

It finished 2-16 to 0-17 at Cedral St Conleth's Park, where Ger Brennan’s men were made battle to the finish by their opponents with Ciaran Byrne’s superb goal at the death eventually putting a seal on the victory for them.

The Wee County had built up a 0-5 to 0-2 lead after the opening dozen minutes before Laois got motoring with scores from ace attacker Mark Barry and Damon Larkin and then levelled through Niall Corbett’s point in the 17th minute.

A hat-trick of points by Barry along with a Ronan Coffey point would be enough for the O’Moore men to edge a 0-9 to 0-8 lead at the interval.

Louth made the best possible restart by winning a penalty which Ryan Burns expertly tucked away in the 38th minute, but Justin McNulty’s charges were not going away as more points from Larkin and Barry had them back within one by the 52nd minute.

The leaders pushed the margin back out to three prior to it being closed down to one again with less than 10 minutes remaining. Crucially, Burns hit the next point for Louth and Byrne would double their tally down the home stretch before crashing in the game’s only goal to cement their provincial semi-final berth while Laois are now bound for the Tailteann Cup.
