Galway’s second-half surge saw them power past New York towards a 3-28 to 0-20 win at Gaelic Park to move into the semi-finals of the Connacht senior football championship.
Matthew Tierney’s early goal in the Bronx was all that stood between the teams at half-time, as the hosts closed out the half with scores from Jack Robinson, Frank O’Reilly (free), Bobby O’Regan (free) and a James Smith two-pointer to leave it at 1-12 to 0-12 when the sides went in.
Robert Finnerty sailed over a score from beyond the arc early in the restart for the Tribesmen and, despite back-to-back points from Robinson at the other end, the visitors got motoring with unanswered scores via Matthew Thompson, skipper Sean Kelly and Finnerty (free) ahead of Cian Hernon lashing in their second goal.
Hernon’s goal came in the 52nd minute for the holders, bumping their lead up to 2-19 to 0-17, and another goal from Tierney six minutes later would well and truly shut the door on the Exiles.
Cillian McDaid and Liam O Conghaile added points either side of a Paul Conroy free from two-point range for Padraic Joyce’s men prior to ‘keeper Conor Flaherty rounding off the 17-point win with a two-pointer in the dying stages.
The only downside of the result for Galway was the ankle injury suffered by John Maher, which saw his withdrawal in the 24th minute, as they'll be keen to have the experienced midfielder fit and available for their provincial semi-final showdown with Roscommon on Easter Sunday.
