Wicklow came up with the goods in extra time to defeat Longford by 2-23 to 1-20 at Glennon Bros Pearse Park and progress to a home Leinster SFC quarter-final date with Dublin next weekend.
A Dean Healy two-pointer and Kevin Quinn goal were crucial for Oisin McConville’s side in the extra periods as they won out by six points and now look forward to welcoming the Dubs to Aughrim in seven days’ time.
It was Longford that led at the end of the first-half of normal time, with Dylan Farrell’s two-pointer from a free at the end of the half doubling their advantage to 0-12 to 0-8 just before the sides went in.
Wicklow trimmed the difference down to one within seven minutes of the restart before hitting the front through a brilliant Podge O’Toole goal which Healy set-up.
Oisin McGaynor’s point soon afterwards left three between them until Dessie Reynolds struck the Midlanders’ goal and, from there, the sides would swap three points back and forth, with O’Toole grabbing the late equaliser for the Garden men (1-15 to 1-15) at the end of normal time.
McConville’s charges ran up a six-point lead in the first 10 minutes of extra time and went on to cement the win with Quinn’s rocket goal in the dying stages.
