Galway made a sizzling start to see off Leitrim by 1-21 to 1-10 in the sides’ Connacht U20 football championship opener in Cloone last night.

Sean O'Connor and Colm Costello (1-9) struck early two-pointers for the Tribesmen as they went out to a 0-8 to 0-0 lead after the opening 10 minutes and they’d cruise towards a 0-15 to 1-2 lead come the interval, with Jack Kelly striking a sorely needed goal for Leitrim.

Costello’s goal came early in the restart for the visitors and, while Dara Greenan and Paul Honeyman pulled back points for the trailers, Galway would ease to an opening victory which saw them with 11 points to spare in the end.

The other game out west saw Mayo dishing out a 1-15 to 0-13 defeat to holders Roscommon in Castlebar.

Peadar Gardiner’s side edged a 1-8 to 0-9 lead at the halfway stage thanks to skipper John MacMonagle’s goal in the 27th minute.

John Curran and Kealen Kelly sent over points early in the restart to level things for the Rossies, but the hosts got into their rhythm again and sent over unanswered scores via Niall Hurley, Tom Lydon (free) and Josh Carey before the points of Oisin Cronin, Darragh Beirne and Lydon ensured the win late on.
