Sligo edged Clare by 1-19 to 2-14 at Markievicz Park to claim their first win in Division 3 of the Allianz Football League this season.

The points of Paddy O’Connor and Niall Murphy helped the hosts to hold a 0-9 to 0-7 lead at half-time and the latter would extend their lead to four ahead of Canice Mulligan crashing in the game’s first goal for them in the 48th minute.

Clare came up with the perfect response to the concession and that saw Aaron Griffin’s shot deflected to the Yeats men’s net three minutes afterwards.

Ikem Ugwueru struck a brace of points to reduce the Banner County’s arrears to two before Nathan Mullen erased those with a pair of his own to steady Sligo’s ship.

The margin would stand at six points when the game ticked into injury-time and, after Ugwueru saw a goal disallowed, Clare would get their second goal through Emmet McMahon to keep the heat on and the same played sailed over a two-pointer in the next attack.

The hosts would hold on however for two vital points in the bid for survival in Division 3, while Clare’s promotion hopes have suffered a severe blow.
