Galway joined Tipperary on six points at the top of the Allianz Hurling League Division 1A table after holding on for a 2-19 to 1-20 victory over Wexford at Chadwicks Wexford Park this evening.
A goal from the in-form Anthony Burns was what saw the Tribesmen leading at half-time in this one (1-9 to 0-10), after Cathal Dunbar and Conor Foley had steered the hosts in front late in the first-half.
Wexford made the perfect restart which was the returning Rory O’Connor hammering to the net for them after intercepting a puck-out and coolly tucking the sliotar away for the umpire’s green flag.
Richie Lawlor steered Keith Rossiter’s side in front moments later, but Galway were able to get motoring again and would move towards a three-point lead with the help of points from Burns and Conor Cooney before being awarded a penalty which Cooney lashed to the home side’s net.
From there, Micheál Donoghue’s side would stretch their lead to seven points and, despite Wexford keeping the heat on with some late frees from Lee Chin, the full-time whistle would confirm Galway’s third win on the bounce.
