Laois lifted themselves from the bottom of the Allianz Hurling League Division 1B table with a 4-18 to 1-19 win against Westmeath in Mullingar this afternoon.
With both sides pointless coming into the all-Leinster clash, it was the O’Moore men that made their goals count to claim two vital points.
Westmeath had made the better start to run up a 0-6 to 0-1 lead as goals from Jordan Walshe and Paddy Purcell saw the visitors take in a 2-6 to 0-9 advantage at half-time.
PJ Scully added a third goal for Laois within five minutes of the restart and, despite Niall O’Brien pulling back a major for the Lake men, Jer Quinlan’s strike minutes later would cancel it out as Tommy Fitzgerald’s men won out by eight in the end.

Meanwhile, Mayo made it two wins from two in Division 3 after handing Cavan a 1-23 to 2-14 defeat in Tooreen.
The Westerners held a 0-13 to 0-7 advantage at the halfway stage and widened the gap to 10 points before Liam Lavin hammered in their goal in the 47th minute, leaving goals from Mark Moffett and Liam O’Brien afterwards as mere consolation for Ollie Bellew’s side.
