Galway picked up their second win in this year’s Allianz Hurling League campaign by seeing off neighbours Clare on a 2-21 to 0-20 scoreline in Salthill.

A minute's silence was observed for the late great Michael Coleman before throw-in at Pearse Stadium, where the All-Ireland champions had made the better start to get out to a 0-4 to 0-1 lead before the hosts got motoring.

After closing the gap to a point, scores from Conor Whelan and Evan Niland (free) surged the Tribesmen in front before Anthony Burns struck two goals in as many minutes to suddenly leave Clare trailing by seven points come the 26th minute.

Whelan, Darren Morrissey and Tom Monaghan pushed the Galway lead out to double figures (2-15 to 0-11) by the half-time whistle and the second-half would see the Banner men unable to net the goals they needed.

Aidan McCarthy’s frees and a Tony Kelly point saw Clare’s deficit reduced to seven points late on, with the full-time result marking a second successive defeat for Brian Lohan’s men in Division 1A.
