Galway continued their impressive start to the season by handing neighbours Mayo a 0-26 to 0-16 defeat before a 12,291 crowd at MacHale Park, Castlebar this afternoon.

Ace attacker Shane Walsh led the way for the Tribesmen who landed seven two-points after the break to win out by 10 and back up last weekend’s opening victory over All-Ireland champions Armagh.

It was Mayo that edged a 0-9 to 0-8 lead at half-time, with Frank Irwin’s point all that separated the teams when they went in.

Cillian Ó Curraoin landed the Connacht champions’ first two-pointer of the second-half and Walsh would back that up with two more of his down to make it a seven-point game.

Ryan O’Donoghue pulled back a point for the home side but another from outside the arc by Ó Curraoin (free) left them with a lot of ground to make up in the closing 15 minutes.

Ó Curraoin struck again from distance before being black carded minutes later and points down the home stretch from Walsh, Rob Finnerty (free) and Paul Conroy were more than enough to see Padraic Joyce’s men remain top of the Division 1 table heading into the third round.
