The late Aisling McGivern

A Down GAA club is in mourning following the passing of one of its most dedicated and popular members.

Aisling McGivern, who served as PRO of St Peter’s Warrenpoint (CPN) for many years, passed away on Saturday following a short illness. Aged just 40, she was the Head of Home Economics and Head of Year 13 at St Louis' Grammar School in Kilkeel, and was a member of Down GAA's Public Relations and Marketing Committee.

Aisling came from a family steeped in the GAA. Her grandfather Emmett was goalkeeper on Down’s 1946 All-Ireland JFC winning team, while her father – also Emmett – won All-Ireland MFC and U21FC medals in 1977 and ’79 as well as an Ulster SFC title in 1978.

"Only one week ago, Aisling was providing updates for people on X on the Bredagh v Burt Ulster Club Hurling Championship tie,” Down GAA said in a heartfelt tribute.

"For this was Aisling, thinking of others and making sure that they were able to follow the game on social media, not just in Co. Down but in reaching across the globe.

"While some others talked and debated whether something could be done or not, Aisling did it, and it was the wee things that she did that made her the special person that she was.

"It was the text message with words of support, or the simple call to someone to offer help, or just her energy and commitment to the tasks that she undertook."

The tribute added: "To the gaels of Cumann Pheadair Naofa, we offer our condolences on the death of a much-valued club officer, a person who symbolised all that is good about Cumann Pheadair Naofa and who was at the heartbeat of all club activities.

"To the staff and pupils of St Louis’ Grammar School, we offer our sincere condolences on the loss of a valued member of the school community."

Her club St. Peter's said: "Aisling played a central leadership role in every aspect of club life. Her input and commitment were enormous, invaluable, and sincerely appreciated by all.

"As Club PRO for many years, Aisling was a pioneer in developing Club social media initiatives. In addition to being Chairperson of the Club Communications Committee, Aisling played a prominent role in the Down County Communications Committee.”

"Our thoughts and heartfelt condolences are with Fiona, Emmett, Claire and Ciaran and the extended McGivern and Moore families at this sad and difficult time.

"The Club will rally round the family and support them at this time of great sadness."
