An early Marcus Kennedy goal proved crucial as Lough Lene Gaels edged out Clonkill by 1-15 to 0-16 at TEG Cusack Park to reach their second successive Westmeath SHC final.

Pipped at the post by Raharney last year, the Gaels will face Castletown-Geoghegan in this year’s Examiner Cup decider after late points from David Williams (two) and veteran substitute Derek McNicholas got them over the line.

Earlier, Kennedy raised the only green flag in the fifth minute after being set up by Warren Williams. Dual star Luke Loughlin grabbed the last two points of the opening half to give Clonkill the slenderest of leads, 0-8 to 1-4, at the break and it was tit-for-tat after that before the Collinstown-based club made a decisive burst in the closing stages.
