Seir Kieran caused a huge upset in the Offaly SHC last night when they beat St Rynagh’s by 1-20 to 1-17 at Grant Heating St Brendan’s Park.

While St Rynagh’s form has been indifferent this summer, no-one saw this result coming. Seir Kieran – who were relegated last year only to be handed a reprieve when Kilcormac/Killoughey’s second team opted to stay in the SHC ‘B’ after winning it – had lost their previous two Group 2 games, but rose their game considerably to leave the three-in-a-row champions between 2019 and ’21 needing other results to go their way if they’re to reach the knockout stages.

The underdogs signalled their intent by firing over the first four points, only for Luke O’Connor to reply with a goal for the Banagher outfit. But that was cancelled out by an Adrian Hynes strike in the 19th minute as the Clareen men took a 1-9 to 1-8 lead into the break.

Further scores from Luke Carey, Kevin Dunne Tom Dooley and Hynes in the second period handed the club of the famous Dooley brothers – Joe, Billy and Johnny – their biggest win in years.
