Straffan progressed to the winners’ group of the Kildare IFC after overcoming Nurney at the second attempt on Tuesday evening.

A replay of last Friday week’s controversial preliminary round clash was ordered by Kildare CCC following a disputed point in the second half. Referee Alan Archbold had Straffan winning by a point, 0-14 to 1-10, despite nearly everyone else having it as a draw, 0-13 to 1-10.

Nurney duly appealed the result and were granted a replay. Their successful appeal was based on verbal submissions, video evidence and the referee admitting that he made a mistake in awarding Straffan an extra point in the closing stages.

But there was no doubt about the result of the Hawkfield replay when two goals late in the first half from Ruairi Power and Aaron Kiernan propelled Staffan to a 2-9 to 0-9 victory. They will be back in action again on Saturday evening against Rathangan, while Nurney head for the losers’ group and a meeting with local rivals Monasterevin.
