Donegal are into the last four of the All-Ireland senior football championship for the first time in a decade after handing Louth a 1-23 to 0-18 defeat at Croke Park this afternoon.
Jim McGuinness’s side will play Dublin’s conquerors Galway for a place in the final after moving up the gears in the second-half to see off Louth, with Eoghan Ban Gallagher’s 58th minute goal wrapping up the win for the Ulster champions at headquarters.
After a decent start saw them 0-5 to 0-2 up inside a dozen minutes, Donegal saw their Leinster counterparts battle back to within a point with Sam Mulroy, Craig Lennon and Tommy Durnin all finding their range.
The points of Oisin Gallen (2) and ‘Man of the Match’ Peadar Mogan saw the Tir Chonaill men close out the half to lead by 0-11 to 0-8 and they’d extend their advantage early in the restart with white flags from Michael Langan and Mogan.
Ciaran Thompson and Langan made it a seven-point game by the midway point of the second-half and, despite a couple more Mulroy points, McGuinness’s men would settle the issue with a close-range goal from Gallagher after Paddy McBrearty’s initial effort came off the post.
It means Donegal and Galway will battle it out in the semi-finals in two weeks’ time, with Armagh now awaiting the winners of Kerry and Derry (3.15pm) in the other last four clash at Croker.
