Campbell's late point denies Galway as Armagh progress to All-Ireland SFC quarters

Stefan Campbell’s fisted point in the fourth minute of injury-time saw Armagh snatch a 1-12 to 0-15 draw against Galway and advance straight through to the quarter-finals of the All-Ireland senior football championship.

The Connacht champions looked to have done enough for a return to the last eight in the race the for Sam Maguire Cup but let a five-point lead slip in the closing quarter at Markievicz Park, which means they’ll have to settle for a place in the preliminary quarter-finals next weekend.

The Tribesmen had been the better team in the first-half despite playing against the breeze, as the points of Paul Conroy and Shane Walsh (2) saw them carry in a 0-8 to 0-6 lead at the break.

Walsh and Rian O’Neill exchanged points early in the second-half prior to scores from Conroy, Dylan McHugh and Liam Silke flying over Blaine Hughes’ crossbar.

Kieran McGeeney’s side battled back as Conor Turbitt began to find his range, and even got in front when goal-scorer Tiernan Kelly put his Clann Eireann clubmate Turbitt through for his fourth point in the 61st minute.

The next two scores would come at the other end from the trusty boot of Walsh to seemingly seal for Galway. However, it was substitute Campbell that had the last say to secure the Orchard men’s draw and quarter-final berth in the process.
