Roscommon put themselves into Monday morning’s draw for the All-Ireland senior football championship preliminary quarter-finals after seeing off Cavan by 3-20 to 1-20 at Pearse Park this evening.
Both sides had been winless in the group stages coming into this third-round encounter, meaning a place in the knock-out stages was up for grabs and it was the Connacht men that earned it.
Davy Burke’s charges had led by 0-7 to 0-5 when Diarmuid Murtagh sent in their first goal on 21 minutes and they’d go on to hold a 1-11 to 0-10 lead at half-time.
Brian Stack registered the Rossies’ second major five minutes into the restart and, while Cavan were able to pull back a goal through Dara McVeety some 13 minutes later, they’d concede another umpire’s green flag soon afterwards.
This time talisman Enda Smith rifled to the Breffni net, making it 3-15 to 1-17, and the time remaining saw Conor Cox (2), Ciaran Lennon and Murtagh all sailing over points before Andy Glennon rounded off the winners’ tally.
