Kildare were crowned All-Ireland minor football Tier 2 champions this afternoon thanks to a 2-12 to 1-10 win over Cavan at Pairc Tailteann in Navan.
Second-half goals from Harry Donnelly and Ronan Kelly were the difference for the Lilywhites as they won out by five points to become the first side to clinch the Paul McGirr Cup.
Cavan’s goal had come via top-scorer Nathan Quigley (1-3) in the 18th minute after he’d been put through by a superb pass from Ryan Nwaneri.
Dylan O’Dwyer and Austin Donegan (2) sent over the last three points of the half for Kildare to leave all square come the break (0-7 to 1-4), and it’d be Donnelly’s goal midway through the second period that put them into a lead they wouldn’t relinquish.
The Breffni boys did make it a one-point game again thanks to an Odhran Madden free with 10 minutes to go, however, it’d be wiped out by a Finn Dowling point before Kelly’s strike with two minutes left sealed the title for Niall Cronin’s lads.
