Peter Canavan believes the raft of playing rule changes proposed by the Football Review Committee will make a referee’s job even more difficult than it already is.

The proposed rule changes, which included four points for a goal and two points for a ‘point’ from a new 40-metre arc, will be trialled in so-called ‘sand box’ matches, starting tomorrow in Mullingar and continuing in Claremorris, Portlaoise, Armagh and Limerick thereafter. They will be trialled in games involving teams that have exited the Tailteann Cup.

"I think there’s too much on the table for these games," the Tyrone legend told the RTÉ GAA Podcast.

"There is too much going on and you have to consider the referee. A lot of these rules are making the job of the referee more difficult, and that's the last thing we need."
