Armagh produced the second-half goods to defeat Westmeath on a 0-16 to 0-11 scoreline at the Athletic Grounds and mark a winning start in Group 1 of the All-Ireland senior football championship.
Conor Turbitt’s free late in the first-half was what separated the teams at half-time (0-7 to 0-6) and the first five minutes of the restart would see Kieran McGeeney’s side outscore their opponents by 0-4 to 0-0 to take control.
Oisin Conaty (2), Rory Grugan and Andrew Murnin raised the white flags that made it 0-11 to 0-6 by the 40th minute and another from Grugan (free) had it at double scores midway through the second period.
Kevin Maguire grabbed a sorely needed point for the visitors on 55 minutes ahead of Luke Loughlin trimming their deficit to four, but the Orchard men got motoring again with scores via Grugan (free) and Conaty ahead of Aidan Nugent and Grugan rounding off their tally in injury-time.
