Kildare and Down cruise to second Tailteann Cup victories

Kildare made it back-to-back emphatic wins in the Tailteann Cup by hammering Waterford on a 5-15 to 0-6 scoreline in Dungarvan this evening.
Paddy Woodgate, Kevin Flynn, Niall Kelly and substitute Shane O’Sullivan (2) netted the goals in a 24-point victory that advances the Lilywhites into the competition’s knock-out stages.
Meanwhile, Conor Laverty’s Down side brought crashing back down to earth after the Exiles’ famous win over Offaly last weekend with a 1-24 to 0-10 victory in Ruislip.
The hosts had held the Mourne men for large portions of the first-half to only trail by 0-8 to 0-5 at the break, but Laverty’s men ran up a 0-14 to 0-6 lead before Odhran Murdock’s 50th minute penalty all but settled the issue for them as they recorded a second win.
In Thurles, Sligo were in impressive form in dishing out a 3-22 to 1-22 defeat to Tipperary.
Yeats County skipper Niall Murphy helped himself to 2-6 over the hour while Sean Carrabine (1-3) supplied his team’s other goal in the 16-point rout.
In the same group, Antrim also made it two wins from two by edging out Wexford by the smallest of margins (1-15 to 0-17) at Chadwicks Wexford Park.
Having registered their goal early on through full-forward Ruairi McCann, Andy McEntee’s men were made to fight to the finish as late points from Paraic Hughes and substitute Ben Brosnan put the pressure on for the hosts before finishing one short in the end.
In Rathkeale, Limerick ended their 12-month wait for a win by seeing off Offaly on a 2-10 to 0-8 scoreline.
Having been level on 0-5 apiece at the interval, two goals from Emmet Rigter steered the Shannonsiders towards a crucial result which brought an end to their 12-match losing streak.
Elsewhere, Fermanagh recorded their second win in seven days by edging past Carlow (1-13 to 0-13) at Newatch Cullen Park.
In the end, Conor O’Shea’s goal three minutes before half-time proved the difference between the sides as the Barrowsiders suffered their first loss after last weekend’s late dramatic late draw with Laois.
