Gearoid O’Connor’s free deep in injury-time earned Tipperary a 3-21 to 1-27 draw with Waterford in this evening Munster senior hurling championship third round clash at Walsh Park.
11,966 supporters were treated to a dramatic finish at the Dungarvan venue as the visitors were able to erase their late four-point deficit with a goal from substitute Sean Kenneally being backed up by O’Connor’s strike to secure a share points.
Goals from Stephen Bennett (penalty) and Jack Prendergast helped Waterford to lead by 2-8 to 0-12 at the halfway stage and, despite Tipp moving in front early in the restart, Bennett would bag his second goal in the 41st minute to steer the Deise ahead again.
Liam Cahill’s side got it level again ahead of Dessie Hutchinson inspiring the host towards a four-point lead and, while the Premier men got it level again, the game (and their season) looked to be up after unaswered points from Patrick Curran (2), Hutchinson and Calum Lyons sailed over their crossbar.
As the derby ticked into the added minutes, Waterford would be stunned by a Kenneally ahead of O’Connor keeping his cool to level it at the death.
