Jason Duffy’s point in the third minute of injury-time secured a 0-13 to 2-6 win for Armagh over Down in Clones as they returned to the Ulster senior football championship final for the second year running.
After a low-scoring opening half-hour at St Tiernach’s Park, Paddy Burns’ goal surged Down in front in the 35th minute ahead of the points of Rory Grugan (free) and Aidan Forker ensuring the sides went in level at the break, 1-2 to 0-5.
Another Grugan free was backed up by a point from Rian O’Neill to move Armagh two ahead after the change of ends but Down got level again before falling behind by one and netting their second goal via Ryan Magill on 48 minutes.
Conor Laverty’s side held a two-point lead with 10 minutes to go in the derby, but couldn’t hold out to pull off the upset as points from Oisin O’Neill (mark) and Aidan Nugent were backed up by this well worked winner that was finished over by substitute Duffy:
