Down took a step closer towards promotion from Division 3 of the Allianz FL this evening after battling past Offaly towards a 4-12 to 2-14 victory at Pairc Esler, Newry.
The Mourne men’s first three goals came from Liam Kerr (2) and Ordhan Murdock, with Kerr’s second putting them 10 points up by the 47th minute.
Jack Bryant got a goal back for Offaly a minute afterwards but it’d be immediately cancelled out by Ryan Johnston’s raising the umpire’s green flag at the other end.
The visitors’ goose looked to be cooked after that until Keith O’Neill rattled the Down net and points from Bryant and O’Neill would make it a four-point game with 10 minutes to go. Pat Havern’s free would steady the ship for Conor Laverty’s men before their opponents saw John Furlong dismissed on a second caution.
The margin stood at four points in the end as Down maintained their 100% record, leaving Offaly still pointless at the bottom of the table alongside Wicklow and Limerick.
