Mary Immaculate College clinched their first Fitzgibbon Cup title in seven years thanks to a 2-14 to 1-15 victory over University of Limerick in Abbeydorney.

Devon Ryan and goalkeeper Jason Gillane netted the crucial goals as Jamie Wall’s charges denied UL a three-in-a-row triumph.

Mary I had taken a 0-5 to 0-1 lead seven minutes in before hitting the jackpot through a Ryan pull when possession spilled out to him on the edge of the square.

A long range free from Gillane would find the net on 22 minutes to send UL further adrift, but the holders got a goal via Gearóid O'Connor in the run up to half-time to leave it at 2-8 to 1-7 when the sides went in.

UL would get themselves back on level terms 10 minutes into the second-half, and even moved in front, but their counterparts were able to steady the ship and pick off points that saw them claiming the title.
