Offaly hurling boss Johnny Kelly has called for the return of the maor foirne role.

Speaking to TG4 after his side’s thrilling Allianz League draw with Wexford last evening, the Portumna man highlighted the on-field communication problems that have arisen between managers and players since the role was terminated in 2021.

“When you’re on the sideline with a great Wexford crowd there tonight, you basically can’t hear five metres into the field,” he explained.

“So I can’t understand how with a pitch this size and with the amount of things going on that you aren’t allowed to have a maor foirne to get out on the field to pass on a simple message.

“It’s absolutely critical that as coaches and managers that we’re allowed to have that. It’s not there unfortunately. Maybe they (the powers-that-be) will look at it again.

“We’ll see.”
