Galway and Tipperary each scored comprehensive first round wins in Division 1 Group B of the Allianz Hurling League this afternoon.
Henry Shefflin’s Galway side would lay down a marker on opening weekend by thrashing Westmeath with a 4-31 to 0-12 victory at Pearse Stadium.
Having carried in a nine-point lead at the end of the first-half, the Tribesmen hit all four of their goals after the change of ends via Jason Flynn (2), Cianan Fahy and substitute Conor Whelan to cruise to the 31-point win.
In Parnell Park, Tipp opened their league campaign with a 2-27 to 0-22 win over Dublin.
The Premier men had been 0-18 to 0-12 in front when Sean Ryan hammered in their first goal eight minutes into the second-half.
The hosts did close the margin down to four after that thanks to a hat-trick of points from Cian O’Sullivan, along with scores from Fergal Whitely and Sean Currie, but their opponents would net again with 13 minutes left on the clock.
Jake Morris provided the finish that saw Liam Cahill’s charges take a 2-21 to 0-19 lead and there’d be no coming back for the capital men from there.
