Jim McGuinness’s Donegal side laid down an early marker in the race for promotion to Division 1 of the Allianz Football League by handing Cork a 1-20 to 2-6 defeat in Ballybofey this afternoon.
The home side put a seal on their emphatic victory with five minutes to go when captain Patrick McBrearty (1-6) hammered in their only goal from close range.
The Ulster side had registered the first four points of the contest before Cork came roaring back with a Eoghan McSweeney goal on 15 minutes and a Brian O’Driscoll point would level the sides.
Donegal surged clear again though, as points from Brendan McCole and Shane O’Donnell late in the half led them towards a 0-12 to 1-3 lead at the half.
The Tir Chonaill men would continue to boss the Leesiders after the turnaround and, despite a Chris Og Jones shot hitting their net in the 50th minute, they went on to steamroll their Munster counterparts with McBrearty’s major the icing on the cake for them.
