Ciaran McNulty scored the winning point in injury-time as Monaghan upset Dublin in their Allianz Football League Division 1 opener at Croke Park tonight.
The Farney men’s 3-9 to 1-14 victory was sealed after Micheál Brannigan turned over Brian Fenton in possession and found Stephen Mooney, who in turn released debutant McNulty in space to slip over the decisive point (see it below) in the fourth added minute.
Monaghan’s match winner had also slotted in a coolly taken goal to the Hill 16 end that fired Vinny Corey's men in front on 58 minutes and, despite the Dubs getting level, it was the visitors that kicked on for the shock win in dramatic style.
The Ulster side had endured a nightmare start that saw Cormac Costello hit their net three minutes in at headquarters, but goals from Jack McCarron (penalty) and Stephen O’Hanlon over a four-minute span had them all square in the run up to half-time.
The All-Ireland champions surged three ahead again after the break thanks to points from Ross McGarry, Cian Murphy and Jack McCaffrey but, as they tend to do, Monaghan kept in the fight and came with a strong finish which saw McNulty providing the finishing touches.
