Winning starts for Laois and Carlow in Division 4

Laois edged their Leinster derby against Longford this evening to ensure themselves two early points in the race for promotion from Division 4 of the Allianz Football League.

The 1-12 to 2-7 victory at O’Moore Park, Portlaoise saw the home side bossing large portions of the first-half to lead 0-7 to 0-2 at the break.

Darren Gallagher’s 46th minute penalty would bring Longford’s deficit down to one before the ball was in their net three minutes later via Damon Larkin, and despite Dylan Farrell’s injury-time goal, Paddy Christe’s men couldn’t nab a result.

In Thurles, Carlow made their goals count in a 3-10 to 1-14 opening round win against Tipperary.

Paddy Creedon had grabbed the first goal of the game in the opening quarter for Tipp, but Conor Crowley and Darragh Foley raised green flags for the home side towards a four-point half-time lead.

The visitors were reduced to 14 men after Colm Hulton picked up a second caution on 52 minutes but, despite the Premier men keeping the heat on, Aaron Amond’s goal with seven minutes remaining would see Niall Carew’s charges over the line in round one.
