Cavan got up and running in Division 2 of the Allianz Football League at the first attempt thanks to a 0-16 to 0-12 win over Kildare at Netwatch Cullen Park.

Played at the Carlow venue due to on-going redevelopment work at St Conleth’s Park, Newbridge, the result marked a perfect start to the league campaign for new Breffni boss Raymond Galligan whom went from team captain to supremo in September.

The Breffni men made a sizzling start via the points of Paddy Lynch (2) and Castlerahan’s Oisin Kiernan, and scores late on in the half from Gerry Smith, Lynch and Killian Clarke saw them take in a 0-9 to 0-6 advantage at the break.

The Division 3 champions would make a decent restart as well, before Kildare narrowed the deficit down to two by the 50th minute with the points of Shane O’Sullivan and Kevin O’Callaghan.

Two Lynch points (one a free) steadied the Blues’ ship however and the Crosserlough marksman would score twice more to raise his personal tally to 0-8, either side of a Cormac O’Reilly point on 69 minutes to secure the opening win.
