Shane McGuigan struck six points as Derry triumphed over Donegal at a wet and windy Healy Park this evening to retain the Dr McKenna Cup.

It finished 0-12 to 0-6 at the Omagh venue, where the Ulster champions moved in front in the 19th minute and never looked back as they recorded their county’s 13th success in the competition.

Skipper McGuigan sent over a pair of frees late in the first-half that sent Mickey Harte’s side in ahead at the break, 0-5 to 0-3.

Points from Paul Cassidy and McGuigan (free) extended the Derry lead to five ahead of Daire O Baoill grabbing a sorely needed score for Donegal on the 50-minute mark.

Conor Doherty and McGuigan raised white flags that brought the winners’ tally up to 0-10 in the difficult conditions, and late points from Niall Loughlin and Cormac Murphy would ensure the double scores victory for the holders.

Along with Derry, this evening's result also marks a 13th Dr McKenna Cup triumph for Harte as a manager having previously won the pre-season competition a dozen times during his 18-year tenure with his native Tyrone.
