Cork collected some early season silverware as they overcame neighbours Kerry in a penalty shoot-out (4-3) at Pairc Ui Rinn in this afternoon’s McGrath Cup final.
Dara Cashman’s late point for the Rebels ensured it finished 1-14 to 1-14 at the full-time whistle and the decider would go straight to spots kicks from there.
After having trailed for large portions of the opening half-hour, Kerry went in front through a Dylan Geaney goal which proved the difference between the sides come half-time (1-7 to 0-7).
A couple of Sean O’Shea frees extended the Kingdom’s advantage after the change of ends before a timely Chris Og Jones goal for the home side.
John Cleary’s men were able to move ahead by two points from there but surrendered their lead twice late on prior to Cashman’s score in the second minute of injury-time ensuring a shoot-out.
In the end, Mark Cronin would dispatch the winning penalty into the top corner as the Leesiders clinched the silverware.
