Coughlan becomes first Donegal GAA female chairperson

December 15, 2023

Former Tánaiste Mary Coughlan

History was made at Wednesday night’s Donegal GAA convention when Mary Coughlan was elected as the county’s first female chairperson.

The former Tánaiste was elected unopposed at the annual gathering in Ballybofey after former chairman Sean Dunnion and Coughlan’s St Naul’s club colleague Cieran Kelly had withdrawn from the race two weeks ago. Coughlan succeeds Fergus McGee, who stepped down after only one year in the role.

Since retiring from politics, Coughlan has served as secretary of St Naul’s and becomes only the fourth county board chairperson after Tyrone’s Róisin Jordan (2014-17), Cork's Tracey Kennedy (2017-20), and Europe’s Eileen Jennings (2006-09).
