Paul Hearne scored the injury-time winner as Shelmaliers dethroned Castletown in today’s Wexford senior football championship final.
It finished 1-12 to 1-11 at Chadwicks Wexford Park, where the winners bounced back from a disastrous start to claim a second title in three years.
Rory Heffernan had the ball in the back of the Shelmaliers net within two minutes of this decider and they’d be dealt another early blow when they lost corner-back Andre O’Brien to a red card.
Eoghan Nolan’s frees helped to get Shels right back in contention though, as they went in at the half trailing 1-6 to 0-6, and a goal from Hearne seven minutes into the second-half would see them hit the front.
Shelmaliers looked to pull away but Ben Brosnan’s frees and a Jonathan Bealin point had it at 1-11 each before captain Nolan and Hearne combined for the latter to shoot over the winning point late on.
