St Joseph’s landed a first Laois senior football championship title in 23 years today after edging Portlaoise by 0-7 to 0-6 at Laois Hire O’Moore Park.
In the end, it was James Kelly’s point with six minutes left in normal time that proved the difference for Mick Dempsey’s men as they captured their club’s 10th SFC crown.
A pair of Eoghan O'Flaherty frees saw St Joseph’s lead by 0-4 to 0-3 at the halfway stage and, while Paul Cahillane levelled for Portlaoise five minutes into the restart, Kelly steered the would-be winners back in front.
The town side got themselves level again and hit the front with a Kieran Lillis point, which was erased by Brian Daly’s long range score, and the win would be sealed by Kelly who finished over after a bursting run by substitute Josh O’Brien.
