Holders Gowna and Killygarry could not be separated in this evening’s crunch quarter-final clash in the Cavan senior football championship at Kingspan Breffni where it finished 2-11 to 0-17.

In what was a repeat of last year’s final in the Breffni County, Gowna had threatened to run away with it early on by building up a 1-4 to 0-1 advantage after 10 minutes with Conor Casey bagging their goal.

Killygarry clawed it back to a three-point deficit before Darragh McConnon hammered in the holders’ second goal on 25 minutes, as they went in leading by 2-5 to 0-9 at the break.

Gowna stretched their lead out to five after eight minutes of the resumption thanks to points from Ryan Brady, Tiarnan Madden and Cian Madden. The Crubany men battled back from there with scores via Cian Keaney (3), Oisin Brady, Darragh Lovett and Daniel Walsh to level matters.

Lovett got Killygarry in front for the first time with three minutes to go ahead of a Cian Madden free at the other end bringing the game into injury-time where neither side could find a winner, meaning a replay next weekend.

Earlier at the Cavan Town venue, Kingscourt Stars recorded a 1-10 to 0-9 victory over Cavan Gaels in a fiery clash that saw the latter side finishing with 11 men.

Peter Corrigan’s goal on 19 minutes steered the Stars towards a 1-4 to 0-5 half-time lead and, while the Gaels battled hard early in the second period, it’d be four red cards in the closing 20 minutes that proved their undoing, with Favour Shehu, Emmanuel Shehu, Niall Murray and Levi Murphy all receiving their marching orders from referee Pat Clarke during that period.

Last night (Friday) saw Jack Brady’s late point rescue a 1-12 to 3-6 draw for Ramor United against Laragh United as the teams get set for a replay next weekend.
