Carlow came good in the second-half to down New York by 0-15 to 0-10 at Netwatch Cullen Park this evening and progress to the Tailteann Cup quarter-finals.

After having surprisingly trailed at the break, the home side held the Exiles to just two points after the switch of ends to win out by five in the end.

Daniel O’Sullivan and Gavin O’Brien led the way for New York in the first-half, sailing over points that had them two up and, while the Barrowsiders responded with a few of their own, Shane Carthy’s second of the day and one from Jack Reilly would move the visitors towards a 0-8 to 0-6 half-time lead.

After having scored a famous win over Leitrim in the Connacht championship nearly two months ago to the day, Johnny McGeeney’s men looked to keep their foot on the throttle for another famous win but it was Carlow that took over after the restart to ensure there’d be no upset.

After Carthy posted his third point in the 41st minute, Niall Carew’s charges outscored their counterparts by 0-7 to 0-0 with Conor Doyle, Jordan Morrissey and Seanie Bambrick among the scorers while ‘keeper Johhny Furey also denied New York a goal at a crucial juncture to help cement the win.

The victory earns Carlow an away quarter final next weekend against either Antrim, Cavan or Meath.
