Monaghan are through to the knock-out stages of the All-Ireland senior football championship after seeing off Clare by 1-23 to 1-18 on a glorious sunny afternoon in Clones.
Jack McCarron led the way for the hosts by notching 0-9 (0-8 from play) over the 70 minutes while Conor McCarthy contributed 1-2 in what was an intriguing second round tie with the Banner County.
After an airtight first-half, the sides went in all square on 0-10 apiece and Clare would hit the net nine minutes into the resumption through Darragh Bohannon to take the lead.
The teams went point for point after that until a couple of McCarron frees had Vinny Corey’s side up by three with five minutes to go and a McCarthy goal in the 69th minute would ultimately settle the issue.
