Monaghan are Lory Meagher Cup champions thanks to a 3-22 to 3-20 victory over Lancashire in what was a thrilling final played in glorious conditions at Croke Park this afternoon.

Niall Garland’s 57th minute goal proved key for the winners as they kicked on for a five-point lead from there and won out by two in the end against the Exiles.

After falling 0-6 to 0-2 behind inside the opening nine minutes, Lancashire struck goals via Robin Spencer and Darragh Carroll to get themselves in front but Thomas Hughes’ goal late in the first-half saw the Farney men carrying in a 1-12 to 2-8 lead at the break.

Carroll netted Lancashire’s third goal early in the resumption but the Ulster side would square this decider with a Garland major in the 49th minute and the same man would find the net again eight minutes later to give Monaghan a foothold.

Points from Stephen Lambe, Niall Arthuer (2) and Hughes would be enough after that to ensure the silverware is headed back to the Farney County.
