Conor Turbitt struck a late goal as Armagh snatched a 1-13 to 1-12 victory against Westmeath at the Athletic Grounds this evening to mark a winning start in the All-Ireland SFC round-robin stage.
In their first outing since the dramatic Ulster final defeat to Derry a fortnight ago, Kieran McGeeney’s side looked in trouble in this one as Ronan O’Toole’s early goal helped Westmeath to lead by 1-7 to 0-7 at the halfway stag.
The visitors were able to keep their noses in front until the closing stages, leading by two points with three minutes remaining, and an upset looked on the cards until a long ball into the square from Rian O’Neill saw substitute Turbitt pounce and send it into the Leinster side’s net.
Talisman John Heslin got it level again for Dessie Dolan’s men but the points of Andrew Murnin and Ciaran Mackin in injury-time were enough to clinch the win for the Orchard County.
